Word Counter

Measure multilingual text with declared word, character, line, sentence, paragraph, reading-time, and frequency rules.

What each total means

Words and sentences
Modern browsers use locale-sensitive Unicode segmentation. Only segments marked word-like count as words. Contractions normally stay together; hyphenated compounds commonly form multiple word segments. A sentence is any non-whitespace sentence segment.
Characters
Characters are extended grapheme clusters, which usually keep combining marks, flags, and joined emoji together. Without whitespace excludes graphemes made entirely of Unicode whitespace.
Lines and paragraphs
Non-empty text has one line plus each LF line break, including a trailing empty line. A paragraph is a run of lines containing text, separated from another run by one or more whitespace-only lines.
Frequency and reading time
Frequency is case-insensitive, canonically normalizes matching words, and breaks ties by first appearance. Long terms are shortened only in the display. Reading time uses 200 words per minute and rounds up to the next second.

Fallbacks and limits

  • If Unicode segmentation is unavailable, characters use Unicode code points, words use Unicode letter, mark, and number patterns where supported, and sentences use common Latin and CJK ending punctuation. Older engines may fall back to non-whitespace word runs.
  • Segmentation can vary slightly by browser, locale data, and language. It does not reproduce every word processor's editorial rules, and sentence boundaries can misread abbreviations.
  • The tool never rewrites the input. HTML text controls normalize pasted CR and CRLF line endings to LF before JavaScript can inspect them; spaces, tabs, Unicode content, and the resulting LF breaks remain unchanged.
  • Analysis stops above 100,000 UTF-16 code units, and frequency output is limited to eight rows. Reading time is an estimate, not a readability or comprehension score.
